DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated Finlandia University 7-1 in the first game of a two-game series by scoring five goals in the third period, two of the goals coming within a minute of each other.
First Period Lead:
It only took two minutes for Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) to score for the Saints, giving CSS the lead early in the game. The Saints wouldn't score again until late in the first period, with Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) scoring unassisted. With these two goals, St. Scholastica would lead 2-0 going into the second period.
Single Goal Second:
After a scoreless 10 minutes of play, Finlandia's Alena Fiala would put the Lions on the board with her third goal of the season. With this being the only goal of the period, the Saints would lead going into the third 2-1.
High Scoring Third:
Within 34 seconds of the period, Sawyer scored her second goal of the night, this time on a powerplay with the assist from Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) to make the score 3-1. Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) would score one minute later, with help from Brenna Smith (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS), to make the score 4-1.
St. Scholastica's Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored two goals within the third period, both back to back. The first came with 14:52 left on the clock with the assists coming from Amanda Broman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) and Sawyer. Josephson's second goal of the night with help from Sawyer, would make the score 6-1.
The scoring barrage would end with the Saints' Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) scoring and Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) assisting with 6:31 left in regulation to make the final score 7-1.
Goaltending/Shots on Goal:
Finlandia's Taylor Gustafson faced 52 shots in the loss for the Lions, while CSS goalie Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) stopped 19. With three minutes left in the third period, St. Scholastica put in backup goaltender Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ), but she did not face any shots.
The top two CSS players for shots on goal were Sawyer with nine and Johnson with seven.
