DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored late and pulled goalie
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) in the final minute to try to send the game into overtime, but without a Hail Mary goal, No. 6 University of Wisconsin-River Falls won 3-2 in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Even First PeriodThe first goal of the game came early when the Saints'
Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)) scored her first goal of the season, getting the assist from
Amanda Broman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) to give CSS a 1-0 lead almost six minutes into the game.
Despite the Saints lead, the Falcons did not losing energy, outshooting CSS 12-4 by the time the Falcons' Carly Moran scored a shorthanded goal with only 15 seconds left in the period. The score would be 1-1 going into the second.
Second Period Scoring:The score remained 1-1 well into the second period of this close game. The only goal of the period was scored by the Falcons' Jillayne Gilbert, unassisted, with six minutes left. The period would end with the score of 2-1, UWRF leading.
The Closer:12 minutes into the third period, UWRF's Ashley Effertz scored on a powerplay to extend the Falcons lead to 3-1. St. Scholastica's
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)), assisted by
Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS), put the Saints back into the running by scoring with one minute left of regulation time.
The Saints then pulled their goalie to give the team a 6-on-5 advantage, but they could not get the goal they needed in the end, falling to the Falcons 3-2.
Goaltending/Shots on Goal:Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 28 saves in the loss for the Saints. Falcons' goalie Angie Hall had 11 saves to earn the win. St. Scholastica's
Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) led the team with four shots on goal.
