PREVIEW: Postseason Fate in the Balance for Women's Hoops

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team enters the final weekend of the regular season tied for the fifth-and-final UMAC Tournament spot and will host North Central University and the University of Northwestern at the Reif Gymnasium.

Last Action: The Saints could not a first half lead against conference unbeaten and Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, falling 65-48 … Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) led the team with 10 points, all of which came in the first half … UWS out-scored CSS 37-16 in the second half.
 
Postseason Hopes: The Saints are tied with Martin Luther College for the final UMAC Tournament slot … The University of Minnesota Morris is a game ahead of both teams … Martin Luther and Minnesota Morris play each other on Friday night … CSS would get into the tournament by going 2-0 this weekend … If the Saints go 1-1 they would need help … If CSS goes winless they will be eliminated.
 
Offensive Struggles in Second Half: In each of their last three losses the Saints have failed to score 20 points in the second half … CSS had just 19 points in the loss at Northland College, 15 points vs. Minnesota Morris and 16 points last week against UWS … In all three of those games, the Saints led at halftime.
 
Seniors: Saturday will be Senior Day for the Saints as they will be honoring five players: Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS), Leah Hamm (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS), Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)), Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) and Holly Peterson (Rochester, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS).
 
Cherish the Ball: The Saints have committed 95 more turnovers than they have forced … Opponents are averaging nearly20 points per game on points off turnovers.

The Rams are coming off an upset victory over Martin Luther last Saturday … That win helped CSS' postseason chances heading into this weekend … North Central held a 14-point lead in the first half against the Saints in Minneapolis earlier this season, but were out-scored 40-21 in the second and third quarters … North Central is led by conference leading scorer Lizzy Swanson, who is averaging 19.7 points per game … Swanson had 31 points in the Martin Luther victory … She leads the UMAC in 3-pointers made (46) and is second in free throws made (97) … Not to be out-done, Jamie High averages 15.0 points per game and is second in the league in rebounds per game (10.7) and third in steals (58) and blocks (28).

The Eagles will be playing for a chance at a UMAC regular season title as they will face UW-Superior in a battle for first on Friday night, before taking on the Saints on Saturday … Northwestern had a pair of close games last weekend, rallying in the fourth quarter to defeat Martin Luther 60-55 and then rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to Bethany Lutheran on Saturday to win 68-65 … Sophomore guard Amy Berglund leads the team with 12.6 points per game … She leads the UMAC, making 83.6 percent of her free throw attempts … Sophomore Jessica Cole is averaging 11.1 points per game … Junior Tiffany Stubbs is at 10.9 points per game and leads the conference making 40.6 percent of her 3-point attempts … Senior Regan Cooper leads the UMAC with 57.5 field goal percentage … Northwestern leads the conference in points per game allowed (56.9), steals per game (12.1) and blocks per game (4.2).
