PREVIEW: Men's Basketball to Face Defending Champ Tommies

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – For the first time in program history, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team will face the reigning NCAA Division III National Champion when it travels to face No. 10 ranked University of St. Thomas on Tuesday night.

Last Action: The Saints went 1-1 at the Carroll University Pioneer Tip-Off to open their season over the weekend … CSS fell to Blackburn College (Ill.) 85-82 to open on Friday, but responded with a 90-79 victory over Principia College (Ill.) on Saturday … Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) scored a career-high 25 points against Blackburn and averaged 18.5 points for the weekend to be named to the All-Tournament team … Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 11 rebounds per game.
 
Bench Support: Sophomore point guard Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) averaged 14.0 points per game off the bench over the weekend … The CSS bench scored 47 points in Saturday win over Principia and averaged 34.0 points in the two games.
 
Need Balance: St. Scholastica had four players score in double-figures in each game this weekend … Last year, CSS was 18-3 when at least three players scored in double figures … They were 7-0 when five players scored at least 10 points.

The Tommies lost their season opener to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls last week, but are coming off a 2-0 trip to the Pacific Northwest over the weekend, beating Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) and the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) … Junior guard Michael Hannon leads the team with 19.3 points per game … Ryan Boll led the team in scoring in both games in Washington and is averaging 18.7 points per game … He also leads with 8.3 rebounds per contest … The Tommies are the preseason favorite to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) … The Tommies did graduate five of the top seven players from last year's NCAA title team.
