Women's Basketball is Beaten Out by Buena Vista

ST. PETER, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was downed by Buena Vista University (Iowa) Saturday afternoon 71-52 in the second game of the Gustavus Adolphus College Classic.

The Action
The Beavers got the ball rolling with a three-pointer to put them on the board first with a score of 3-0. Buena Vista's McKenna Whitehill then put the team ahead even more ahead with two good free throws. Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) was able to get the Saints on the board with a three-pointer, bringing the score to 5-3. A Mel Weisbrick (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Hibbing CC)) jumper made it 13-10 in the final minute of the opening quarter, but the Saints trailed 17-10 after one period of play.

The Saints had trouble scoring in the second quarter for the second straight day as it was only able to muster six points in the quarter, going 3-for-15 from the floor and trailed 31-16 at the half. The Beavers held a double-digit the rest of the second half to defeat the Saints 71-52.

Top Performers
Walther led the Saints with 12 points. Emelia Miner (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) had nine points on three 3-point field goals all in the fourth quarter. Holly Vankempen recorded seven blocks and and a team-high nine rebounds. The seven blocks ties a program record. 

Claudia Larson of Buena Vista nearly had a triple-double with 12 points, 11 blocked shots and eight rebounds. Sidney Beckman led the team in scoring with 15 points.

Up Next
The Saints (0-2) travel to Concordia College-Moorhead for a non-conference contest on Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
