Blackburn Edges Men's Basketball in Season Opener

WAUKESHA, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) poured in a career-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough as Blackburn College (Ill.) outlasted the St. Scholastica men's basketball team with an 85-82 victory on Friday at  Carroll University (Wis.) Pioneer Tip-Off.

Neither team led by more than six points and there was eight ties and four lead changes in the first half alone. Newman and Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) combined to score the opening nine points of the season for the Saints. A Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run for CSS to give St. Scholastica a14-9 lead eight minutes into the game.
 
Later in the first half the Saints had their biggest lead of the game following a Marc Peterson (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) 3-point field goal to make it 20-14 with under 10 minutes to go. The Beavers responded with an 8-0 run to take a four point lead. However, the Saints went into halftime with a 36-35 lead after a Newman layup in the final minute.
 
Newman had 12 points at the half to lead all scorers. Both teams committed 11 turnovers in the half, each had seven assists and both teams scored 16 points in the paint.
 
After the 10th tie of the game in the opening two minutes, the Saints held a close lead for the next six minutes. The Beavers regained the lead with 12:20 remaining and did not relinquish it the rest of the way.
 
Blackburn hit a pair of 3-pointers to take its biggest lead of six with five minutes to go. St. Scholastica got within one point on a couple of occasions, but the Beavers had an answer. The Saints had possession down by two in the final 20 seconds, but would be called for an offensive foul.
 
The Beavers drained two free throws to make it four, but the Saints didn't go away as Kory Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) drained a quick 3-pointer to cut it back to one in the waning seconds. Blackburn converted two more free throws to ice the game and make the final 85-82.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Newman was 11-for-15 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds in addition to his career-high 25 points. Deadrick and Stark each added 13 points, while Weets added 11 points off the bench. Deadrick scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half and also had a team-high nine rebounds. The Saints shot 48 percent from the floor for the game.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
DeAndre Manuel led the Beavers with 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Jake Maestranzi added 16 points, including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The Beavers shot 51 percent from the field for the game.
 
Up Next
The Saints will face Principia College (Ill.) tomorrow at the Pioneer Tip-off. Action will begin at 1 p.m.
