ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team tried to hang on after taking a first half lead on No. 8 University of St. Thomas in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday. However, the Tommies got a tying goal in the final three minutes of regulation and then scored the game-winner in the final two minutes of the second overtime to prevail 2-1.
Saints Score First
The Tommies controlled the majority of the possession in the first half, but the Saints did well defensively, limiting quality scoring chances for St. Thomas. The best chance for St. Thomas came on a free kick from 25 yards out that went just wide of the left post.
Later in the half, the Saints played a ball into the box and the Tommies would take down a Saints player and the referee awarded St. Scholastica a penalty kick.
Kyle Farrar (London, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) would take the kick and bury it in the 37
th minute to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
CSS Tries to Hang on
The Tommies put on relentless pressure in the second half, delivering 12 corner kicks in the half. The Saints would be called for a foul in the box off one of those corners in the 82
nd minute setting up a penalty kick attempt for the Tommies. However, the Tommies' PK attempt would hit the crossbar and the Saints maintained 1-0 lead.
St. Thomas continued to pressure CSS and the Saints were showing signs of wearing down and the Tommies were finally able to equalize with less three minutes remaining in regulation with a goal by Tony Kuplic.
Saints Play a Man Down in OT
In the waning moments of regulation, there was a skirmish at midfield, which resulted in Farrar being sent off with a red card. That meant the Saints had to play overtime one man down.
The Saints held their own in the first overtime not allowing much for quality scoring chances for the Tommies and the contest went to a second overtime.
It appeared that the contest was headed to a penalty kick shootout until the Tommies broke through on a cross into the box that was headed in by Kuplic again with 1:57 left to give the Tommies the 2-1 victory and end the Saints' season.
Thank You Seniors
The Saints will say goodbye to four seniors: Farrar,
Shawayne Folkes (Toronto, Ontario/Maxwell Heights),
Josh Robak (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) and
Ryan Flynn (Adelaide, Australia/Modbury HS (Century College)). Folkes and Robak have been to four NCAA Tournaments.
