-The two-goal victory was the closest margin since the 2010 season
-Sawyer and Lalikova scored their first goals of the season

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) On Tuesday night in a conference game, the 10th-ranked St. Scholastica women's hockey team took down Finlandia University (Mich.) 3-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena, with the Saints taking advantage and scoring off of two power plays.

The Action
CSS player Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) won the first faceoff for the Saints to start the game. CSS fought hard for faceoff wins this game winning 48 of them compared to the Lions' 24. Hanowski won 19 out of the 22 she faced. Another element of the game the Saints took advantage of was power plays; the Lions received nine penalties throughout the game. Denisa Lalikova (Puchov, Slovakia/Proctor Academy, N.H.), assisted from Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) and Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS), scored the first goal of the game halfway through the first period for the Saints by taking advantage of the short-handed Lions.

The next power play goal came a minute into the second period. Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) assisted to Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) to put the Saints up 2-0. St. Scholastica and Finlandia would fight off various penalties and try to take advantage of power plays throughout the second, but the final score of this period would be 2-0.

Finlandia would break through the Saint defense and would score 10 minutes into the third period, putting the score at 2-1. With a chance to tie up the game and only a minute to go in the third period, the Lions pulled their goalie to give them an extra player on the ice. Instead, CSS took this as an opportunity to score. Sawyer and Hanowski assisted to Stegora, who scored on the empty net. This goal brought the score to 3-1 in the Saints favor, and would be the final score.

Finlandia had 18 shots on goal, compares the St. Scholastica's 55. Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) lead the Saints with 10 shots on goal; Sawyer had the second most with nine. CSS goaltender Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) saved 17 out of the 18 shots she faced.
