MOORHEAD, Minn. (
csssaints.com)- The St. Scholastica men's soccer team edged out Concordia College-Moorhead 2-1 in a non-conference match on Saturday. This is the first win against a non-UMAC team in a regular season finale since 1999, as the Saints had lost seven straight prior.
The Action
Five minutes into the game,
Shawayne Folkes (Toronto, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) got the first shot on goal for the Saints. Concordia would not get its first shot on goal until five minutes later.
Kyle Farrar (London, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) would be the first to put the Saints on the board, taking advantage of a penalty kick to make the score 1-0. The half would end with CSS leading 1-0, as the evenly-matched teams struggled to set up opportunities to score.
In the second half, the Cobbers scored 10 minutes in with a header shot that just flew past the CSS goalie. The header goal would bring the score to a tie at 1-1.
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School), however, was able to push the Saints to a win by scoring off of an assist from Farrar. The game would end 15 minutes later with a score of 2-1.
St. Scholastica narrowly led in shots on goal, with six; the Cobbers had five. Farrar and Folkes led the Saints with two shots on goal each. In his third game of the season, CSS goalie
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) saved four out of the five shots he faced to earn the win.
