DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit, scoring the equalizer with nine minutes remaining in regulation and then
Janelle Rouillard (Dayton, Minn./Rogers HS)'s goal five minutes and 20 seconds into the first overtime gave the Saints the 2-1 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday at Saints Field.
First Half
The Saints controlled much of the game, but could not find a way to break down a sturdy Cougar defense. The best chance for the Saints in the first half was when
Hannah Zeis (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS ) hit the crossbar in the 24
th minute.
Morris was looking to counter when it had the chance and it found that opportunity in the 40
th minute when Molly Hancuh played a ball over the top of the defense to the right hand side and Carly Denler beat the 'keeper to the ball and floated it over the top and into the net to give Morris a 1-0 halftime lead.
Second Half
As the second half continued, CSS was not getting many great scoring opportunities. With under 10 minutes to go,
Rachel Dixon (Superior, Wis./Superior HS ) re-entered the game and 21 seconds later she was on the receiving end of a
Taylor Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS ) cross and she volleyed it into the next to tie the contest at 1-1 with exactly nine minutes remaining.
Overtime
The game remained tied after 90 minutes so it went to overtime. Halfway through the first overtime period,
Jenna Mangine (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS ) struck a ball to the top of the box that was flicked forward by T. Olson to Rouillard, who hit a perfect strike past the goalkeeper, ricocheting off the inside of the far post and in, to give the Saints the 2-1 victory.
