csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior 87-72 on Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
Good Start, Bad Finish Opening QuarterAfter the Yellowjackets recorded the first field goal, the Saints responded with five straight points, including a
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) 3-point to give CSS a 5-2 lead.
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) and
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) followed with 3-pointers to keep the Saints in front.
However, UWS closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run as CSS was held without a field goal the final four minutes and 25 second of the quarter. Superior led 19-11 after one quarter of play. Superior got 12 of its 19 points from its bench.
Only Two CSS Players Score in the Second QuarterThe Yellowjackets scored the first four points of the second quarter to extend their run to 15 straight points. The margin climbed as high as 13 points a couple of times in the second quarter, but freshman
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) kept the Saints in it scoring 14 of the team's 21 points in the quarter.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) had the team's other seven points as UWS led 39-32 at halftime.
CSS Gets Close, UWS Pulls AwayAfter Superior scored the opening bucket of the second half, the Saints went on a 7-0 run and a VanKempen 3-pointer made it a two-point game two minutes into the third quarter. Unfortunately, UWS answered with a 10-2 run to extend the lead back to 10.
St. Scholastica only got as close as six the rest of the way as the Yellowjackets pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 87-72.
Team StatsThe Saints shot better than the Yellowjackets in the first half. CSS was at 42 percent and UWS at 39 percent. Superior then shot 52 percent in the second half, while the Saints were 45 percent. Superior controlled the glass with a 45-33 advantage, including 22 offensive rebounds. The Saints made nine, 3-pointers and were 13-of-16 from the free throw line.
Top Performances for CSSWalther led all scorers with a career-high 26 points. VanKempen had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Brennan added 11 points.
Top Performances for UWSAllyssa Lindberg had 16 points off the bench to lead the Yellowjackets. Justin Larson had 13 points, Allie Nelson had 12 points and Hailey Kontny added 10 points.
