csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team could not hand the University of Northwestern its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) loss Friday night at the Ericksen Center, falling 74-49.
First QuarterMichala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) got the Saints on the board with a bucket on the opening possession of the game. However, the Eagles answered with seven straight points to take a five-point lead. Three consecutive 3-pointers by
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) gave the Saints the lead back at 11-10.
CSS extended its lead to four, before Northwestern closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to take an 18-16 lead. Brannen and Walther combined for 15 of St. Scholastica's 16 points in the quarter.
Second QuarterThe Saints managed just seven points in the second quarter as the Eagles scored 12 of the final 13 points of the quarter to take a 36-23 halftime lead.
St. Scholastica was 3-for-16 from the floor in quarter. Northwestern got 16 of its 18 points from its bench.
Second HalfCSS began the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers from
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) and Walther, followed by a
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) layup to make it a five-point game.
Unfortunately, the Eagles responded with an 11-0 spurt and led 49-37 after three quarters. The Saints went without a field goal for over seven minutes in the quarter.
The Saints did not get any closer in the fourth quarter as the Eagles pulled away for the 74-49 victory.
Team StatsThe Saints shot only 29 percent for the game and attempted just five free throws. Northwestern shot 49 percent from the field. The Eagles had a big edge in the paint, out-scoring the Saints 38-18. The Northwestern bench almost matched CSS' point total with 47 points.
Top Performances for CSSBrennan just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Walther finished with 11 points and five steals. Brannen finished with nine points.
Top Performances for UNWJessica Cole had 18 points off the bench for the Eagles. Taryn Tumbleson was also in double-figures off the bench with 10 points. Courtney Cunard had six assists.
