PREVIEW: Basketball Teams Head Across the Bridge Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's and women's basketball teams will have their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Bridge Battle this weekend when they travel to face the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

CSS Notes: The Saints suffered their first conference loss of the season on Sunday with a 91-75 setback at the University of Minnesota Morris … Prior to the loss the Saints were 4-0 in UMAC play for the first time since the 1997-98 season … Seniors Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) and Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) have combined to lead the team in scoring in each of the last seven games … Naslund leads the team overall with 12.4 points per game … Laughlin is averaging 11.6 per game and is third in the conference with a .569 field goal percentage and second with 12 blocked shots … Freshman Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) is averaging 11.8 points per game and is third in the league with 21 steals … CSS has attempted the second-most 3-pointers per game in the conference (25.9), but rank only eighth with a .318 3-point field goal percentage … The Saints are out-scoring teams by 47 points in the first half, but are being out-scored by 44 in the second half this season
 
UWS Notes: The Yellowjackets (7-6, 4-1 UMAC) are coming off an 89-63 loss to Division II Minnesota-Duluth on Wednesday, which snapped a three-game win streak… After dropping its UMAC opener at Bethany Lutheran College, UWS has won four straight conference games, all by at least nine points … Junior Zach Schradle leads the Yellowjacket attack, averaging 19.7 points per game, which ranks third in the conference … He leads the UMAC in 3-point field goal percentage (.559), free throws made (67) and total rebounds (101) … Senior Brian Lindblom is averaging 18.4 points per game and is second in the conference with 87 made field goals.

CSS Notes: The Saints have won four of their last five after suffering a seven-game losing streak … CSS is coming off a big 78-69 road win at the University of Minnesota Morris on Sunday … Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) scored a career-high 25 points, including 17 in fourth quarter, to lead the Saints to their first regular season victory in Morris since 2004 … For her efforts Brennan was named the UMAC Player of the Week … Brennan has scored in double-figures in eight straight games … She leads the UMAC making 85 percent of her free throw attempts and is third with a .508 field goal percentage … Sophomore Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) has scored in double-figures in her last four games, including two double-doubles … VanKempen leads the conference with 24 blocked shots … Freshman Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) has scored in double-figures in seven of her last eight games.
