DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team was defeated by Marian University (Wis.) 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena in a game where CSS was shutout until halfway through the third period.

First Period
It was a back and forth game for much of the first period with neither team gaining much of an edge.

It was not until the 15:11 mark that the Sabres would take the lead in the game on an unassisted goal scored by Jessie Meluch to set the score at 1-0.

That would prove to be the only scoring of the period as Marian took their one goal lead into the first intermission.

Second Period
There were no goals scored in the second period for either team as they played out to a 1-0 second intermission score.

Third Period
The Sabres would double their lead on another unassisted goal this time by Courtney Wittig  to make the score 2-0 with just under 13 minutes left in the game.

Following a pair of Marian penalties which gave the Saints a two-skater advantage, Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) notched a power play goal with assists by Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) and Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)), and with 10:06 left in the game CSS found themselves trailing by just one goal at 2-1.

The Saints put forth an extreme effort in the next 10 minutes of the game rattling off shot after shot, including three in the final minute, but it proved to be too little, too late as they were unable to tally the game tying goal. When the final horn sounded CSS found themselves behind on the scoreboard as they fell to Marian by a final score of 2-1.

Saints goaltender Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) totaled 36 saves on 38 shots faced while her cross ice opponent Ali Glazer stopped 32-of-33 shots for Marian.
