Women's Hockey Tallies Seven in Victory

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team had five different players record goals in a 7-4 victory over Marian University (Wis.) on Friday in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play at Mars Lakeview Arena.
 
CSS Jumps Out Front
The Saints scored the only two goals of the first period. Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) got St. Scholastica on the board when Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) found her in front of the net and she buried it with less than nine minutes left in the period. Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) was also credited an assist.
 
With two minutes remaining in the period, Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) hit a slap shot from the point to beat the Sabre goaltender to extend the lead to 2-0 at the first intermission. Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)) had the assist.
 
CSS Extends its Lead
After Marian scored a power-play goal in the first minute of the second period, Amanda Broman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) scored her first goal of the season midway through to make it 3-1. Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) had the assist.
 
Sawyer found the net on the power-play with three minutes left in the period to make it 4-1 St. Scholastica at the second intermission. Guzzo tallied another assist.
 
Wild Third Period
The Saints and Sabres combined to score five goals in the first eight minutes and 38 seconds of the third period. Courtney Wittig had both goals for Marian, including one on a penalty shot.
 
Sawyer added her second of the night two minutes into the period as did Johnson two minutes after that. Logergren recorded a power-play goal later in the period with assists from Johnson and Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) to make it 7-3. Marian added an unassisted goal with nine minutes to go to make the final 7-4.
 
Goaltending
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 40 saves to earn the victory for the Saints. Lindsey Strainis had 22 saves before being relieved by Ali Glazer in the third period.
