DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – For the second straight day, No. 5 Lake Forest College (Ill.) needed a third period goal to get past the St. Scholastica women's hockey team, winning 3-1 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Much Like YesterdayAfter a scoreless first period, conference leading scorer Michelle Greeneway gave Lake Forest the 1-0 lead three minutes into the second period. It was Greeneway's third goal of the series.
The score was still 1-0 in the third period until
Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) tied the game 1-1 after poking in her own rebound on the power-play five minutes and 24 seconds into the period. For Hamann, it was her first goal of the season.
The Saints had all the momentum and was on the power-play with nine minutes to go. However, the Foresters would get a two-on-one breakout short-handed with one of the skaters being Greeneway. The Saints decided to take Greeneway away, which left Olivia Spellmire one-on-one with the goaltender and Spellmire found the net to give Lake Forest a 2-1 lead with 8:40 left.
The Saints would have a short 5-on-3 advantage following the short-handed goal, but could not get a shot on goal. Holly Lesperance iced the game with an empty-netter with 20 seconds left to give Lake Forest the 3-1 victory.
CSS Penalty-KillFor the second consecutive day, the St. Scholastica penalty-kill, kept the Lake Forest power-play unit off the scoreboard. The Foresters, who entered the weekend with the top power-play unit the country went 0-for-8 for the weekend.
GoaltendingLindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS)d made 30 saves in the loss for the Saints. Allie Carter had 15 saves for the Foresters (15-1-1, 10-0-0 NCHA).
Up NextThe Saints (5-9-0, 4-4-0 NCHA) will be at St. Norbert College next weekend for more NCHA action. Friday's game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
