csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team held leads at the first and second intermissions, but allowed five goals in the third period to fall to No. 8 University of Wisconsin-River Falls 7-5 on Tuesday night.
First PeriodOf the 12 goals scored in the game, only one was scored in the first period.
Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) put the Saints on the board with less three minutes remaining in the period. Former Falcon,
Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) had the assist. The Falcons had a 13-8 shot advantage in the period.
Second PeriodAfter the Falcons tied the game, the Saints responded a little over two minutes later on a
Denisa Lalikova (Puchov, Slovakia/Proctor Academy, N.H.) power-play goal to make it 2-1. Sawyer and Guzzo had the assists.
One minute and nine seconds after that goal, St. Scholastica extended its lead to 3-1 with five minutes remaining in the period on an
Anja Kadijevic (Zagreb, Croatia/General HS (Lindenwood)) goal.
Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) was credited with the assist.
The Falcons scored on the power-play with less than a minute left in the period to make it 3-2 at the second intermission. River Falls had a slight edge in shots in the period, 13-12.
Third PeriodThe Falcons (12-2-1) scored 46 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 3-3. However, the Saints quickly regained the lead on a Guzzo unassisted goal 28 seconds later.
Another River Falls power-play goal tied the game at 4-4 with 15:31 remaining. The Falcons then took their first lead of the game two minutes later on a Haley Nielson goal. UWRF added a third consecutive goal midway thru the period to make it 6-4.
Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)) got the Saints back within a goal with 7:26 remaining.
Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had the assist. It stayed that way until the Falcons scored an empty net goal with 23 seconds left to make the final score 7-5.
GoaltendingLindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 33 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Angie Hall had 23 saves to earn the win for the Falcons.
