csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team wrapped up play at the University of Northwestern Labor Day Tournament with a pair of losses on Saturday morning to No. 25 Coe College (Iowa) and Dominican University (Ill.)
#25 Coe 3, CSS 0The 25
th-ranked Kohawks swept the Saints early in the morning after CSS ended the night before with a grueling five-set match against No. 20 Augsburg.
The first set was won when Coe (3-1) went on an 8-1 run midway through the set and then held off the Saints for a 25-22 victory. The second set was settled early when the Kohawks opened with a 12-2 lead and took the set 25-19. The third set went back-and-forth and both squads had set points. However, Coe took advantage of it second set point to take the match in three sets 27-25.
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) had eight kills to pace the Saints.
Nikki Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS),
Christaia Houser (Esko, Minn./Homeschool) and
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) added seven kills apiece.
Kariana DeYoung (Deer River, Minn./Deer River HS) had five blocks and Morrin led the team with 20 digs.
Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) led the team with 18 assists. Coe was led by Brianna Smith with 14 kills.
Dominican 3, CSS 1The Saints ended tournament play with the Stars of Dominican University, and despite taking the first set, fell in four.
CSS got off to a great start against the Stars with a 7-2 lead in the first set. Dominican battled back to tie the set at 20 and then again at 24-24. The set needed overtime, but the Saints prevailed on their third set point with a kill by Morrin to win 29-27.
The Stars (4-1) took the second set 25-19 after going on a 7-0 run at one point. Dominican then won the first five points of the third set and opened up a 15-4 advantage before winning it 25-15.
The Saints jumped out a 4-0 lead in the fourth set, but the Stars got back in and closed out the set and the match by recording the final five points to win 25-17.
Morrin had 11 kills and 18 digs to lead the Saints.
Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) registered 10 kills and Elvehjem had nine kills. Jansen once again led the team with 25 assists. Kendyl Todd had 13 kills to lead the Stars.
Up NextThe Saints (2-4) will be in Oshkosh, Wisconsin next weekend for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic. CSS will open with Marian University (Wis.) and UW-River Falls on Friday, September 11.
