csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team suffered a pair of five-set losses on Friday to Loras College (Iowa) and No. 20 Augsburg College at the University of Northwestern Labor Day Tournament.
Loras 3, CSS 2It was a tight five set match to open the tournament as the Saints fell to Duhawks 15-13 in the final set.
The first set was decided when Loras recorded the final five points to win 25-19. CSS responded by controlling the second set to win it by the same 25-19 score.
The third set needed overtime as the Saints had a 23-19 lead before Loras (2-0) scored four straight points to tie it at 23. Each team then had three set points that were fended off until the Duhawks closed the set with a kill to take it 30-28.
After the tough set 3 loss, the Saints jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set and later went on an 8-0 run to send the match to fifth set, by winning 25-19.
St. Scholastica trailed 13-9 in the fifth set, but recorded four straight points to tie it at 13-13. Unfortunately, Loras recorded back-to-back kills to close the match.
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) had a team-high 18 kills and 20 digs to pace the Saints.
Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) and
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) added 13 kills apiece.
Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) had 31 assists, while
Emily Kessler (Blackberry, Minn./Greenway HS (Itasca CC)) added 21 assists. Loras had five players record at least 11 kills.
#20 Augsburg 3, CSS 2The Saints had another marathon match to end the night as they gave No. 20 Augsburg all it could handle, but fell 15-12 in the fifth-and-deciding set.
The first set was decided when the Saints went on a 9-1 run midway through and ultimately captured the set 25-19. CSS opened the second set up 6-2, but the Auggies (3-0) scored nine of the next 11 points and never trailed the rest of the way to win 25-18.
CSS closed the third set strong recording the final seven points to take a 2-1 lead in the match by score of 25-20. Augsburg fought back and never trailed in the fourth set to win 25-14 and force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Saints led 5-2 early and later led 11-9. However, the Auggies scored six of the final seven points to take the set and the match 15-12.
Morrin had another big match with 19 kills and 19 digs. Elvehjem added nine kills and
Nikki Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had eight kills.
Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) had a team-high 21 digs. Kessler led the team with 23 assists and Jansen added 20 assists. Ashley Peper led Augsburg with a match-high 24 kills.
