Notables-The Saints have won six straight season openers. ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team defeated both University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Hamline University by 3-1 scores on Tuesday to begin the 2015 season.
CSS 3, UW-River Falls 1After dropping the first set 25-19, the Saints won the next three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20 to take the match.
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) led the way with 13 kills. She also had a match-high four service aces.
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) added eight kills and
Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) had six kills. Morrin led the team with 29 digs.
Emily Kessler (Blackberry, Minn./Greenway HS (Itasca CC)) had 19 assists and
Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) added 17 assists. Rebecca Gasper led the Falcons with 15 kills.
CSS 3, Hamline 1In the nightcap, it was déjà vu as the Saints dropped the first set 25-20, but once again responded in the next three sets winning those 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19.
This time Morrin led the team with 14 kills. Elvehjem had 13 kills and Belden added 11 kills.
Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) had a team-high 18 digs. Kessler finished with 24 assists.
The Saints, as a team, had seven service aces.
Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) had three of those aces. Julia Zolnosky had a match-high 24 kills for the Pipers.
Up NextThe Saints return to St. Paul to take part in the University of Northwestern Labor Day Tournament this weekend. CSS will play four matches beginning with Loras College (Iowa) and Augsburg College on Friday.
