DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team broke open a 2-1 game in the sixth inning by plating nine runs in its final three at-bats to win 11-1 over Northland College in eight innings on Friday in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament at Wade Stadium.
The Saints got two runs across in the bottom of the first when
Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn./Floodwood HS (Doane) ) drove in
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) later plated Bernsdorf.
Northland cut the CSS lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning on a RBI groundout. It remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth. The key play of the inning was with two outs when Colvard singled through the left side; Neutzling, who was at second, stumbled over the diving third baseman and would be thrown out going home. However, obstruction was called allowing Neutzling to score.
Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) followed with a two-run single to extend the CSS lead 5-1.
Shayne Ciernia (Eagan, Minn./Breck HS ) had a RBI double in the seventh to make it 6-1. The eighth inning saw five Saints come across to score to end the game by mercy rule. Marolt had a sacrifice fly and A. Colvard scored on a wild pitch.
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) then drove in
Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) and Neutzling provided the final blow with a two-run double to end the game at 11-1.
Daniel Wood (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS ) improved to 9-0 as he went eight innings, striking out five, walking none and allowing just four hits. Neutzling was 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. A. Colvard was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
The Saints (31-11) will face Bethany Lutheran College in tomorrow's championship game at noon. If Bethany wins that game, there will be a second championship game immediately following. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
