Kevin Wagner (Cleveland, Minn./Cleveland HS) placed fourth in the Decathlon on Friday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-America accolades.
Wagner ThursdayWagner began competition on Thursday in the decathlon. His first event was the 100m dash where he set a personal-best time of 11.13 seconds to place sixth in the event. The competition then went to the long jump, where once again Wagner set a personal-best mark of 22'0.75" (6.72m) to place third in that event.
In the shot put, he didn't set a PR, but he had another top five finish with a toss of 40'3.25" (12.27m). In the fourth event of the day, Wagner tied his outdoor PR in the high jump, clearing 6'2" (1.88m) to finish tied for third. In the final event of the day, he placed 12
th in the 400m dash with a time of 51.68.
After five events, Wagner sat in fourth place with a point total of 3,638 points. Comparing the last two years after day one, he had 3,446 points in 2014 and 3,473 points in 2013.
Wagner FridayWagner opened day two on Friday with the 110m hurdles and despite not setting an overall PR in the event he did a decathlon PR in the event with a time of 15.51, which placed him ninth in the event. He then set another decathlon PR in the discus with a mark of 126'7" (38.59m) to place third in that event. So after seven events, Wagner was in fourth place, only 17 points out of second with 5,063 points.
In the pole vault, Wagner cleared 13'1.5" (4.00m), which tied for seventh. That moved Wagner all the way up to second place. He then broke another decathlon PR in the javelin throw with a mark of 157'7" (48.03m) to also finish seventh in that event.
Wagner entered the final event, the 1,500m run, in second place. He finished 14
th in that event with a time 5:02.46, which dropped him down to fourth overall with a final program record point total of 6,785 points. That bested his previous program record by 247 points.
Near Miss for PetersonJeremy Peterson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) was in action in the hammer throw on Friday. Peterson, who finished 19
th in this event at last year's championships, qualified for the finals today with his second throw of 190'5" (58.04m). That was his second-best mark of the season.
Heading into the finals, where the top nine marks move on, Peterson was in sixth place. After fouling on his first two throws in the finals, he would not better his mark on his third and final throw. That meant he needed to rely on his second throw of the preliminaries to earn All-America honors by finishing in the top eight. Unfortunately, three other competitors passed Peterson in the finals, including one on his final throw to put Peterson ninth officially.
Buske Wraps up a CareerBrianna Buske (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer HS) competed in her first outdoor championships as she took part in the prelims of the 400m dash. Buske ran in the first heat and posted a time of 57.15, which would be good enough for 18
th place overall. The top nine times advanced to tomorrow's finals.
TomorrowNicole Christianson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) will compete in the high jump beginning at 11:30 a.m. eastern time.
