DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team used a seven run seventh inning to pull away from the University of Northwestern in an otherwise tight game that ended with CSS on top 14-4 in eight innings.
The Eagles got the scoring started in the second inning when former Saint
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS ) lined an RBI single to right center off of Saints starter
Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) to make the score 1-0 after two.
The Saints would answer the Eagles run with a three run third inning of their own on an RBI single by
Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS (UW-Superior) ) and a two RBI triple by
Sam Christofferson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) to put CSS on top 3-1.
The Saints would add an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead when
Al Marolt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) reached on a throwing error that scored
Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS (North Dakota) ).
That score remained until the sixth inning when Northwestern scored three runs off of bases loaded walks to tie the game at three runs apiece going into the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning the Saints offense erupted for seven runs to give CSS an 11-4 lead.
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) opened up the scoring with an RBI single and was followed up by Christofferson who cleared the bases with a three RBI double for four quick runs to start the inning.
Getchell would then add a two RBI triple of his own for the fifth and sixth runs of the inning and
Austin Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) would add an RBI groundout for the seventh and final run of the inning.
CSS would add three more in the eighth inning on RBIs by Christofferson,
Chris Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ), and Colvard to put the mercy rule into effect and solidify a 14-4 win for CSS.
Christofferson would finish his monster day at 3-for-5 with six total RBIs and two runs scored while Duex and Minks each finished 2-for-4 on the day.
Jake Turner (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) got the win in relief for the Saints pitching 2.1 innings allowing no hits and striking out three.
CSS (24-9, 15-1 UMAC) will take on Northwestern again tomorrow in a doubleheader at Wade Stadium with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 p.m. Catch that game and others live at Saints Sports Net.
