WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team won both of its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Crossover games against the University of Minnesota-Morris (10-3) and Martin Luther College (13-0) on Thursday at the West St. Paul Dome.
CSS 10, Minnesota-Morris 3 The Saints started off the UMAC Crossover with a 10-3 victory in their first game against the University of Minnesota-Morris.
CSS had their bats going early in this game. In the top first inning St. Scholastica loaded the bases with only one out but were unable to capitalize with the next two batters striking out. However, the Saints loaded the bases again with two outs in the top of the second inning and this time they were able to take advantage scoring six runs.
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single.
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) then reached base on an error and was able to advance to second with the bases clearing in the process giving CSS a 4-0 lead.
Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) finished off the big second inning with a two-run home run to left field to make it 6-0 after two innings.
The Cougars staged a small rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gina Downie lead things off with a bunt single and then Autumn Mahoney walked to give UMM runners on first and second with nobody out. Molly Olson was up next and got a pitch to hit driving the ball over the fence for a three-run homer to cut the Saints lead in half.
St. Scholastica was held off the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning with Dailey slugging a solo homerun, her second of the day, bringing the lead to 7-3. CSS then tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of extra-base hits.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) hit a RBI double with one out leaving runners on second and third. After Logergren popped out for the second out,
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) drove in two more runs with a double of her own brining the final score to 10-3.
St. Scholastica recorded 14 hits in the game getting strong production from the middle of its order.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) got the start for the Saints and pitched all seven innings giving up three earned runs, three hits, and striking out 10.
Mariah Essig completed all seven innings for the Cougars allowing four earned runs, 14 hits, and striking out nine.
CSS 13, Martin Luther College 0 F/5 The Saints got another strong pitching performance in the second game of the UMAC Crossover with
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) throwing five shutout innings giving up one hit and striking out eight.
CSS stayed hot offensively in the second game as well recording 16 hits in total. St. Scholastica got the scoring started in the first inning after a MLC throwing error on a
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) single allowed
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) to score.
Once again CSS did the majority of their damage in the second inning.
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) singled home a run to make it 2-0 in favor of the Saints. Then Warren hit a grand slam to make it 6-0 and Logergren capped off the second inning scoring with a two-run home run of her own bringing the score to 8-0.
St. Scholastica added five more runs in the fourth inning with
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS), Jazdzewski, McGuiness, and
Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) picking up RBI's.
Kelli Doell got the start for Martin Luther pitching 3.1 innings while giving up 12 earned runs and 14 hits. Kathryn Marquardt finished the game for the Knights give up two hits in 0.2 innings work.
The Saints will continue play in the UMAC Crossover on Friday with a pair of games starting with Bethany Lutheran at 10:30 a.m. and then Crown College at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the West St. Paul Dome.
