MANKATO, Minn. (csssaints.com) The St. Scholastica softball team kept its perfect UMAC record alive as they toppled the Bethany Lutheran Vikings not once, but twice on Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minnesota with final scores of 4-0 and 5-2.
Game 1: CSS 4 , Bethany Lutheran 0The first of the two games proved to be a good one, as both teams were playing fantastic defensively through the first five innings.
The Saints finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) doubled to left, scoring two runs.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) continued to do her job in the bottom of the sixth, shutting out the Vikings for another inning.
The Saints weren't done. They piled in two more runs in the top of the seventh off of a
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) double to left, and then a
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) single to left as well. Mizera breezed through the Viking batters in the bottom of the seventh and completed her shutout.
The win gives Mizera an 8-4 record on the year, while opposing pitcher Anna Pipenhagen falls to 4-8.
Game 2: CSS 5, Bethany Lutheran 2The second game proved to be just as good as the first, but the action started a lot earlier in the ball game.
After a great performance by Mizera in game one, it was
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS)'s turn to take the mound for the Saints. Kohl faced trouble early, as the Vikings scored the first run of the game off a throwing error by the Saints infield.
St. Scholastica bounced back immediately, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning.
Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) starting things off with a sac bunt to bring home
Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS).
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) followed up with a RBI single of her own, and
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) closed out the scoring with a single to left field.
Bethany Lutheran struck back in the third for one run, but the Saints held on to the lead and would remain in front the rest of the game.
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) scored in the fifth from third base on a wild pitch, and
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) homered in the seventh for the exclamation point.
The win was given to pitcher
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), who advances to 3-2 on the season. The loss was given to Desiree Becker, who falls to 4-9.
The two wins moves the Saints to 15-10 on the season, with a 9-0 record in UMAC play. Bethany Lutheran falls to 8-18 on the season, and 2-7 in the UMAC. Up next for the Saints is a home game against conference foe Northwestern Monday at 3 p.m. at Kenwood Field.
