NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team swept the Knights of Martin Luther College in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The first game needed extra innings as the Saints pulled away with a 6-3 victory in eight innings with the second game also going to the Saints by a score of 9-3.
Game 1: CSS 6, MLC 3 F/8The first game of the doubleheader required extra innings but the Saints offense exploded for three runs in the eighth inning to put the game to an end with a score of 6-3.
The Saints got their bats going right away as
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) started off the game with a lead-off double to left field and would later be brought in to score on an RBI single from
Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). That would be all the Saints could get for the inning though.
CSS increased their lead in the third inning as
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) got on base with a walk which was followed by a single to center field from Dailey.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) would then hit a single to center to bring in Warren to score. Next,
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) reached first on a fielding error by the Knights with Dailey scoring in the process to make the score 3-0. Martin Luther got a couple runs back in the bottom of the inning however to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Saints had a few more chances to put the game out of reach but were not able to take advantage as the score remained at 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning with the Knights coming up to bat. Martin Luther would tie the game up at three apiece and after a scoreless seventh inning the game would go into extras.
CSS would waste no time in the extra innings as they put up three runs in the eighth inning.
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) started it off with a double to center field and would later advance to third.
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) brought in Schiro with a sacrifice fly to right field. Warren followed that up with a double of her own and Dailey would bring her in for her second RBI of the game on a single to left field.
Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) would come in to pinch run for Dailey at first base and made it all the way home on an RBI-single to left field by
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS). The Saints defense held up strong in the bottom of the inning as they came away with the 6-3 win.
Mizera pitched a complete game while giving up eight hits and striking out seven Knights batters to earn the victory for the Saints.
Game 2 CSS 9, MLC 3The Saints would carry their good play into the second game of their doubleheader as they completed the sweep with a 9-3 win.
Martin Luther started off the scoring in this game however as they took an early 1-0 lead going into the second inning. CSS threatened early in the second inning as Jazdzewski hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a single by
Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS). After Henning stole second base,
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) reached on a fielder's choice but Jazdzewski would be tagged out at home. Schiro would tie the game up with a sacrifice fly to score Henning but that's all the Saints would come away with in the inning.
The Knights broke the tie in the third inning as they scored a couple runs to make the score 3-1 going into the fourth inning where the Saints' bats would come alive. CSS got things going with singles from McCabe and Henning and later they would both score on a double to right center from Schiro, who would later score on a single from
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS). Warren would later bring McGuiness in to score on a double for the final run of the inning as the Saints scored four runs on six hits to go ahead 5-3.
The Knights would be held scoreless for the rest of the game, but the Saints offense did not stop as they added three more runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, McCabe would force a walk to bring in Logergren to score. The next batter, Jazdzewski, reached on a error as
Cayla Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) and Dailey came in to score and increase the lead to 8-3. CSS would finish up the scoring in the seventh inning as McGuiness would hit her second RBI of the game to bring in Bremer and make the final score 9-3.
