WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened Saturday at the Rebel Spring Games by taking down Coe College (Iowa) 5-3, before falling to No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan University 8-0 in five innings.
CSS 5, Coe 3 The Saints exacted some revenge on Coe, who defeated the Saints in the opening game of NCAA Tournament last season, by rallying past the Kohawks 5-3.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) struck out five and scattered five hits with her only hiccup coming in the top of the fifth inning.
After Coe stranded five runners in the first two innings, the Saints would get a leadoff triple from
Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) in the bottom of the second. Two batters later,
Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) singled in Henning to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) led off the inning with a home run to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Kohawks broke into the scoring column in the top of the fifth. With two outs in the innings, Coe got a RBI single and that was followed by a two-run inside the park home run to put the Kohawks in front 3-2.
It remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth. A walk and a double put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs.
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) followed with a two-run double to put CSS back up 4-3. Later in the inning,
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) doubled in Jazdzewski to make it 5-3.
The Kohawks (2-1) put runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh, but Mizera struck out the final batter to give the Saints a 5-3 victory.
McGuiness was 3-for-4 at the plate. Dailey and Warren each added a pair of hits.
#8 Illinois Wesleyan 8, CSS 0 (F/5) A five-run third inning doomed the Saints in an 8-0 loss to No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan to end the day.
