WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its Spring Break trip with a 13-3 loss to No. 25 Simpson College, but followed with an 8-6 victory over Misericordia University (Pa.) at the Rebel Spring Games.

#25 Simpson 13, CSS 3

Simpson improved to 7-0 on the season with a 13-3 victory over the Saints in five innings, thanks to a seven-run second inning.

The Storm had 11 RBIs on 11 hits and drew 10 walks. The Saints scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freshmen Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) each walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) had a RBI on a groundout.

Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) took the loss for the Saints, while Riley Fisher allowed just three hits in four innings to earn the win for the Storm.

CSS 8, Misericordia 6

The Saints responded in the second game of the day, by earning its first win of the season by an 8-6 score over Misericordia.

After CSS stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Cougars got on the board with a two-out single. It remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Schiro scored on an error to tie it. Another error allowed Rydlund to cross the plate and give St. Scholastica a 2-1 lead.

Dailey extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth, scoring on an Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) sacrifice fly. However, in the bottom frame, a CSS error would prolong the innings and allow the Cougars to tie the contest at 3-3.

With the score still tied entering the top of the seventh, Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) led off the inning with a double. That was followed by a RBI double by Dailey to give CSS a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, Bremer drove in two runs with a single and Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) doubled in two more runs to make it 8-3. That last two runs proved to be important.

The Cougars added some drama in the bottom of the seventh. A walk, a single and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. Another single made it 8-4 and brought the tying run to the plate. McGuiness then entered the pitching circle in relief and would allow another RBI single to bring the score to 8-5. An RBI groundout made it 8-6 and put the tying run in scoring position. McGuiness ended the drama by striking out the final batter as the Saints held on for the 8-6 victory.

In her first collegiate appearance, Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) earned her first collegiate win, going 6.1 innings and striking out three. Mizera, Dailey and Rydlund each had two hits in the win.

Tomorrow the Saints (1-3) play two more at the Rebel Spring Games as they face Coe College (Iowa) at 12:15 p.m. (ET) and No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan University at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
