ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team started conference play with a bang, scoring five runs in the first and last inning en route to an 11-0 victory over Northland College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints started rolling right away in the first inning as Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) opened up the game with a single and would then score on a Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) RBI double in the next at bat. Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) would bring in Logergren on an RBI single to give the Saints a quick 2-0 lead. A walk forced by Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and a single by Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would load the bases for Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS), who hit a sacrifice fly to score Warren. After a wild pitch that would advance the runners, Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) would reach first on a Northland error while McGuiness and Johnson would get home to give the Saints a commanding 5-0 lead after one inning.

The bats cooled down a little bit until the fifth inning when the Saints added another run on an RBI single by Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) that would score Jazdzewski and make the score 6-0. After a quiet sixth inning, the Saints offense would explode for another five-run inning. McCabe started it off with a solo home run. Later on the Saints loaded the bases for Logergren and she took advantage with a double that would bring in two runners to score. Logergren and Henning would later score on another LumberJill error to give the game its final runs of the game as the Saints won 11-0.

Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) earned the victory on the mound for the Saints, pitching six shutout innings while giving up five hits and striking out four Northland batters.

The Saints will continue with UMAC play as they will be taking part in the UMAC Crossover this Thursday and Friday in West Saint Paul. They are scheduled to play Minnesota Morris and Martin Luther on Thursday with games against Bethany Lutheran and Crown on Friday.
