PELLA, Iowa. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team was unable to pick up a win on Sunday as it fell to St. Norbert College 8-6 and then Central College by a score of 9-1.

CSS 6, St. Norbert 8
Despite a hot start, the Saints were not able to come away with a win in their first game of the day, losing to the Green Knights of St. Norbert College by a score of 8-6.

The Saints offense was rolling right from the start as Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) ripped a double to left field to score Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and give the Saints the quick 1-0 lead. The next batter, Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS), would also double to left field to bring in Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) made it three doubles in a row for the Saints, scoring Henning in the process and giving the Saints an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The bats would cool down a little bit with no scoring until the bottom of the third as St. Norbert took advantage of having the bases loaded for most of the inning, scoring six runs and taking the lead away from the Saints. After a couple more scoreless innings, the Green Knights added to their lead on a double-RBI single to make it 8-3 in the fifth inning.

The Saints would not quit though, as Henning smashed a home run to left field to start the sixth inning. Later on in the inning with the bases loaded, Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) would force a walk to bring in a runner and Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) followed that up with a sacrifice fly to close the gap to 8-6 but the Saints couldn't complete the comeback as that ended up being the final score.

McGuiness took the loss for the Saints, pitching two and a third innings while allowing six runs with four of them earned and striking out one batter. Morgan Rusch got the win for the Green Knights, going five innings allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out two.

CSS 1, #19 Central College 9 F/6
The Saints started out with the lead once again, but were unable to hold it as they lost to the Dutch of Central College by a score of 9-1.

After a scoreless first inning, the Saints would get on the scoreboard first on a Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) RBI-single to left field to score Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)). That would be the only lead for CSS as the Dutch bounced right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on a couple RBI-singles to take the lead.

Central College would add to its lead in the next inning, bringing in four runs on four hits, which was keyed by a steal at home and an RBI-triple. The Saints were had a chance to cut into the lead in the fourth inning but were unable to take advantage as the inning ended on a double play. CSS had another opportunity in the fifth with a runner on second but were not able to capitalize. Central would put an end to the game in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on three hits to make the final score 9-1.

Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) would take the loss for the Saints, pitching five innings while allowing nine runs on 10 hits, while striking out three Dutch batters. Mallory Schulenberg went the distance for the Dutch to pick up the win.

The Saints (6-10) will be back in action on Tuesday as they begin UMAC competition with a visit to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
