WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (csssaints.com) – After a pair of one-run defeats on Tuesday, the St. Scholastica softball team closed out its action at the Rebel Spring Games with a pair of wins over Westminster College (Pa.) and Husson University (Maine) on Wednesday.
CSS 12, Westminster (Pa.) 6 The Saints began the day by defeating Westminster 12-6 thanks to 10 runs in the final four innings.
CSS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) scored on a Titan error and
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) drove in
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS).
After Westminster tied the contest in the bottom of the second, the Saints regained the lead in the fourth when Logergren led off with a triple and
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) drove her in with a single. Later in the inning,
Carly Safranski (Argyle, Minn./Stephen-Argyle Central HS) hit a pinch hit RBI single to score McCabe and
Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored on a
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
The Titans cut the CSS lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Saints responded by getting four runs across in the sixth. After
Carley Henning (Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) scored on an error, McGuiness had a RBI single and Warren drove in two with a single as the score stood at 9-4.
In the seventh,
Cayla Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) scored on an
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) bunt and Bremer later scored on a wild pitch.
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) drove in the final run with a double to make the final 12-6.
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) earned her second win this season, striking out five in five innings of work. McGuiness, Warren, Logergren and McCabe each had a pair of hits.
CSS 7, Husson 5 The Saints ended the trip with a near no-hitter, but also had to survive a furious rally from Husson to win 7-5.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) did not allow a hit through six innings of work. In that time, the Saints put up a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the fifth, CSS received a couple of two-run home runs from McCabe and Warren. Logergren also drove in a run in the inning. Henning and
Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had RBIs in the sixth to make it 7-0.
In the top of the seventh, the Eagles got back-to-back singles to open the inning and end the no hitter. After a walk and an error the bases were loaded with one out and the score 7-1. Back-to-back singles followed to plate three more runs and cut the margin to 7-4. Husson added another run on a groundout and it had the tying run on base when the final out was recorded by fly out to make the final 7-5.
Mizera had nine strikeouts in the complete-game win and allowed four hits in that seventh inning. Henning was 2-for-2 at plate to lead the offense.
The Saints (5-7) will next be in action on Saturday, March 28 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to face the University of Dubuque in a doubleheader.
