Notables-Warren saw her hitting streak end at 12 games after going hitless vs. Muskingum-CSS allowed only two earned runs for the day-The Saints had just three hits in the loss to Marietta
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team had a pair of one-run setbacks on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games, falling Muskingum University (Ohio) 4-3 and Marietta College (Ohio) 3-2.
Muskingum 4, CSS 3 The Saints only had one bad inning against the Muskies and it was enough to hold off CSS 4-3.
That bad inning was the bottom of the second when a two-out error extended the inning and four unearned runs would cross to give Muskingum a 4-0 lead.
The Saints were unable to get anything going offensively until the top of the seventh.
Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) began with a pinch hit single. Two batters later,
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) hit a two-run home run to make it 4-2.
A Carley Safranski pinch hit single and a
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) single put two runners on with two outs.
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) followed with a double to left scoring one, but holding the tying run at third. Unfortunately, the Muskies would get a strikeout to end the rally and the game.
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) struck out six and did not allow an earned run in six innings of work, but picked up the loss. McGuiness had a pair of hits to lead the offense. The Saints out-hit Muskingum 8-6.
Marietta 3, CSS 2 The Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the fifth, which was enough to defeat the Saints 3-2.
St. Scholastica loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first. After a runner was cut down at the plate, McCabe was hit by a pitch to force in
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and give the Saints an early 1-0 advantage.
A CSS error led to Marietta's first run of the game in the top of the third. Cierra Bloom reached on an error and then later scored on a groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
The Pioneers got their first two batters on to leadoff the fifth. After a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, Marietta recorded back-to-back RBI singles to take its first lead at 3-1.
The Saints got one run back in the bottom half when Warren drove in Rydlund with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. However, CSS stranded a runner at third in the inning. The Saints would not threaten the rest of the way, ending in a 3-2 defeat.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) had three strikeouts in the loss for the Saints. CSS mustered only three hits in the contest.
The Saints (3-7) will wrap up action at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow when it takes on Westminster College (Pa.) at 10 a.m. (ET) and Husson University (Maine) at 12:15 p.m. (ET).
