Notables -Three of CSS's five hits vs. Luther were home runs-Three of Luther's 12 runs were unearned-CSS mustered just two hits vs. Hamline
ROCHESTER, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team dropped its season opening games to No. 18 Luther College (Iowa) in five innings 12-3 and then to Hamline University 8-0 in six innings down at the Rochester Dome on Sunday.
#18 Luther 12, CSS 3 (F/5)Luther got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning when Sara Nelson hit a sacrifice fly with one out to plate the first run of the game and put Luther up 1-0. The Saints did manage to get the third out of the inning on the same play, but it was after the Luther runner had crossed the plate and after two innings Luther led 1-0.
Freshman
Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would even the game in the top of the third inning with the first of the Saints' three home runs on the day which tied the score at 1-1.
Luther would add five more runs in the bottom of the third inning on two consecutive run scoring doubles and a 2-run homer to put Luther up 6-1 after three.
CSS would answer Luther's five run third inning with two more runs in the top of the fourth by
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) to cut the deficit to just three runs at 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Saints, Luther would back up their five run third inning with a six run fourth inning that included three unearned runs after an error in the outfield for what would have been just the first out of the inning. Five of the six runs for Luther were scored before CSS was able to record a out.
The last run was scored on an RBI groundout for Luther and the fourth inning ended with Luther holding a nine run lead at 12-3, and that is the way it would end as the Saints managed just one baserunner in the top of the fifth as CSS would drop their season opener 12-3.
Bremer, Warren, and Mizera all finished with one hit for the Saints, while
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) and
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) both finished 1-for-2 in the game.
Hamline 8, CSS 0 (F/6)It was all Hamline from the word go in this game. The Pipers got the scoring started in the first inning on an RBI single to put themselves up 1-0 after one.
Hamline would add another run in the third inning on another RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
After three runs in the fifth inning to make the lead 5-0, Hamline would add three more runs, this time in the unearned fashion on a 3-RBI single to set the final score at 8-0.
Mizera took both losses for CSS today to start off her season 0-2. Bremer and Warren earned the only two hits for the Saints in game two.
CSS (0-2) will next be traveling to Winter Haven, Florida for their spring trip. They will kick off the trip with two games on Friday. First versus Simpson College (Iowa) at 10 a.m. (ET) then against Misericordia University (Pa.) at 12:15 p.m. (ET).
