Notables-CSS led by as much as 28 in the second half-The Saints had four players score in double figures on the night-Northland was outrebounded by the Saints 42-19
DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team used a 48-point second half to defeat Northland College 76-58 Tuesday at the Reif Gymnasium.
CSS jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead over the first 2:10 of the game in which five of the points were scored by
Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) including a 3-pointer to start the game.
The Saints would lose the lead, however, as Northland embarked on a 20-11 run to take a two point lead which forces the Saints to take a timeout with 8:25 left in the first half.
CSS and Northland would go on to trade baskets for the rest of the half to tie the game at 28 at halftime. The Saints would have taken a two-point lead into the locker room, but a last second layup by Northland tied the game up just before the buzzer.
The second half started out much like the first half had ended with no team seeming to gain an advantage. It was not until the 17:34 mark that CSS would begin to pull away. Over the next six minutes, and with CSS up 35-34, the Saints would go on an incredible 19-0 run to propel them to a 20-point lead with just over 10 minutes left to play. The run was highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by
LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)), and only ended when Northland managed a layup with 10:50 to go.
CSS would quickly answer back with a
Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) 3-pointer to spark another run this time an 11-2 run to make the score 66-38 with 8:04 remaining.
The Saints would then coast out their lead maintaining it at about 20 en route to a convincing 76-55 win over Northland.
Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) led CSS in scoring with 13 points while Naslund and
Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) added 12 of their own. Hall finished with 10 points.
CSS (9-10, 5-3 UMAC) will next be in action this Friday when they play host to the University of Minnesota Morris with that game set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. Come watch the Saints live at the Reif Gymnasium or catch all the action live at Saints Sports Net.
