LAKE FOREST, Ill. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica men's hockey defeated No.15 Lake Forest College 2-1 in game one of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup Quarterfinals on Saturday.
CSS dominated the first period offensively outshooting the Foresters 17-3. However, the Foresters got on the board first when Bobby Barnett scored five minutes in. The Saints made it 1-1 late in the first period when
Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) scored his eighth goal of the season with 23 seconds left.
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assist.
In the second period,
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) scored what would be the game-winning goal six minutes into the period from Hills and Williams on the power play. The Saints scored the only goal in the period but were heavily outshot 16-5 by the Foresters.
Both teams tightened up defensively in the third as only 15 shots were recorded between both teams. Lake Forest was given a power play chance midway through the period but could not convert with the Saints holding on to take the game 2-1.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) was solid in net for St. Scholastica making 25 saves on 26 shots faced. Leo Podolski made 28 saves on 30 shots faced for LFC.
The Saints can advance with a win or tie tomorrow against the Foresters. A Lake Forest win would force a 20-minute mini-game at the conclusion game two. Game two's action is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.
