FOND DU LAC, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team ended the first half of its season with an Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) game-winner 21 seconds into overtime to defeat Marian University (Wis.) 2-1 on Wednesday night.
 
Regulation
The Saints struck first with five minute to go in the first period on an Anja Kadijevic (Zagreb, Croatia/General HS (Lindenwood)) goal, her third of the season. Brandi Malwitz (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Sawyer had the assists. CSS only had two shots on goal in the first period.
 
After a scoreless second period, the Sabres tied the game with 11:21 left in the third period. Abby Dokken had the even-strength goal. Marian would be called for two penalties the rest of regulation with the last being costly.
 
Overtime
Marian was called for a penalty with 21 seconds left in regulation. The St. Scholastica power-play carried into overtime and Sawyer struck just 21 seconds into the overtime session to give the Saints a 2-1 victory. Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) was credited with the assist.
 
Goaltending
Kristen Hunt (Winnipeg, Manitoba/West Kildonan) made 28 saves to earn the victory for the Saints to improve to 3-0 this season. Lindsey Strainis made 19 saves in the loss for the Sabres.
 
Up Next
The Saints (5-4-0, 4-2-0 NCHA) are off until after the holidays and will be in action next on January 8 and 9 at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.
