csssaints.com) – Bethany Lutheran College out-scored the St. Scholastica women's basketball team 28-13 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Saints 74-57 on Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
BLC Out of the GateThe Vikings started the game by scoring the first nine points. The Saints finally got things going and eventually tied it at 16-16, following a
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) 3-pointer. However, Bethany Lutheran held a 24-20 lead after the first quarter.
After falling behind by eight in the second quarter, St. Scholastica went on an 8-1 run to cut the margin to one. Again the Vikings held the lead and went into the locker room up 37-35 at halftime.
CSS Takes the LeadThe third quarter saw only 18 combined points between the two teams, but it also saw the Saints take their first lead of the game at 44-42 with 1:39 to go in the quarter on a VanKempen layup. The Vikings again responded as Briana Brandts scored the final four points of the quarter to give the Vikings a 46-44 lead, heading into the fourth.
BLC Pulls AwayThe Vikings began the fourth quarter scoring 13 of the first 15 points to extend their lead to 59-46. The margin remained in double-figures the rest of the way as the Vikings won 74-57.
Top CSS PerformersBrittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) led the Saints with 18 points and six rebounds.
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) added 10 points and
Emelia Miner (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) and Sam Brannan each had nine points. The Saints were 10-for-13 from the free throw line.
Top BLC PerformersConference leading scorer Haley Sandin had 28 points to pace the Vikings. She also had four steals and five assists. Dakota Ellinghuysen had 14 points and Brandt chipped in 11 points.
