DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- It was the Saints show Friday as the St. Scholastica women's basketball team dominated its way to victory defeating Northland College 68-50 at Reif Gym.
Season OverviewThe victory was much needed with CSS coming off a seven game losing streak, now improving their record to 2-7 on the season.
First HalfEmelia Miner (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) knocked down a three to start the game early on and the Saints never lost the lead from there on out. Miner was on point from three tonight, shooting 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, finishing with nine points total and two steals.
As a team St. Scholastica shot an impressive field goal percentage of 48 percent and 33.3 percent from three. The team also capitalized on free throw opportunities, making 71.4 percent from the charity stripe.
Second HalfThe Saints held a 36-20 lead at the half and needed to continue the consistency to hold off the Jills. CSS came out hot, scoring the first three shots of the half to improve their lead by six.
By the end of the third quarter St. Scholastica was up by 28, the largest lead of the game, with the score at 54-26. The closest Northland would get the rest of the contest was within 16 as the Saints offense continued to put up points and the defense allowed the opposite.
StandoutsTop performers from Friday's game include
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) who recorded a double-double on the night, making 7-of-12 from the field, ending with 14 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds and marked two turnovers for good measure.
Also standing out were
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) who ended the day with 11 points, hitting 3-of-4 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line as well as tallying three assists and two steals.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) led the team in rebounds with 12, five offensive and seven defensive, while
Rachel Weyenberg (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Destinie Villebrun (Orr, Minn./North Woods HS (Mayville State)) each recorded a single block, two total for the team.
