DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was out-scored 26-9 in the first quarter as the University of Wisconsin-Stout defeated the Saints 87-63 on Tuesday night at the Reif Gymnasium.
The game quickly turned into an uphill battle for the Saints as CSS went without a field goal for nearly nine minutes between the first and second quarters and Stout went on a 27-1 run during that span. CSS had a difficult time stopping the duo of Sarah Schoch and Kyleigh Hebert for the Blue Devils who each scored eight points in the first quarter alone.
Although St. Scholastica played a much better second quarter, scoring twice as many points as the previous quarter, UW-Stout still extended its lead by three to make it 47-27 going into the second half.
The top performers for the first half included
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) who shot 3-for-5 from the field, ending with eight points, one assist and two steals. Also performing well in the first quarter was
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) who recorded six points, while coming up with two steals.
The Saints did in fact play a stronger second half, improving their field goal and free throw percentages and the squad out-scored the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter by six points.
However, it turned out to be too little too late after allowing their opponent to extend the lead by 30 at the end of the third quarter. A key component of St. Scholastica's loss was Stout's ability to shoot nearly 60 percent from beyond the arc.
Walther finished the game with a team-high 17 points, going 3-for-6 from three, with Brennan not far behind at 14 points.
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) finished the game as CSS's top rebounder grabbing 10 total, seven on defensive end of the court.
Up NextThe Saints (3-8) will be off until after the holidays and will be back in action on January 2 at Crown College.
