Saints Pull Away from 'Jacks with Strong 2nd Half

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team out-scored Northland College 51-38 in the second half to win going away on Friday 85-68 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) home opener at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
It's Raining 3s
After Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) scored the first bucket of the game on a layup, the next seven made field goals for the Saints come from beyond the arc. St. Scholastica had seven-made 3-pointers in the first 12:24 seconds of the game.
 
The LumberJacks hung around with timely 3-pointers of their own, as well as, only converting one turnover in the first half and trailed by only one point in the waning moments of the half. Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) closed the first half with the Saints' eighth 3-pointer of the half, banking it in as time expired to make the halftime score 34-30 St. Scholastica.
 
CSS Pulls Away
The Saints began to attack the hoop more effectively to open the second half and led by 10 with over 15 minutes. CSS then put the game away with a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to make the margin 24. The LumberJacks would not get any closer than the final score of 85-68.
 
The Saints shot 49 percent from the floor in the second half and converted 17 points off of eight Northland turnovers in the half. CSS also had a 24-12 scoring advantage in the paint in the half.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) led four Saints in double-figures with 17 points, 13 of which coming in the second half. Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) had double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Newman and Marc Peterson (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) each added 13 points. Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) had six of the team's 21 assists
 
Top Performances for Northland
Harrison Lucas had 14 points to pace the LumberJacks. Rijo Jackson and Aaron Houle each added 11 points off the bench. Northland finished with a field goal percentage of 38 percent.
