HANCOCK, Mich. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored five first period goals on its way to a season-opening 7-1 victory at Finlandia University (Mich.) on Tuesday.
Scoring BarrageAfter a scoreless eight minutes of action, the Saints scored three goals in the span of a minute and 17 seconds midway through the first period.
Sami Anderson (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) scored the first goal with 11:24 on the clock in the opening period.
Zahn Thompson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS) had the assist.
Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) made it 2-0 CSS with 10:40 remaining in the period.
Brandi Malwitz (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Laurissa Kostiw (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) were credited with the assists. 33 seconds after that
Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) netted her first goal of the game and the score was now 4-0.
Later in the first period,
Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) made it 4-0 with 1:31 remaining.
Amanda Broman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) and
Hailee Johnson (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) had the assists. In the final nine seconds of the period Thompson found the back of the net to make the score 5-0 at the first intermission. Guzzo and
Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) had the assists.
Hanowski later scored in the second period and the final CSS goal was by Sawyer in the third period, her second of the night, to make the final 7-1.
Kristen Hunt (Winnipeg, Manitoba/West Kildonan) had 11 saves to earn the victory for the Saints. Taylor Gustafson had 44 saves in the loss for the Lions.
Up NextThe Saints will head to Lake Forest, Illinois to face No. 10-ranked Lake Forest College for a two-game series this weekend. Saturday's game will be a non-conference contest starting at 2 p.m.
