DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated conference foe Concordia University Wisconsin 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena behind two early third period goals.
First PeriodThe first period was nearly played to a scoreless tie if not for a late goal scored on the power play by Concordia. With just 31 seconds to go in the period, Brittany Sticha scored an unassisted goal beating Saints goaltender
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission
Second PeriodCSS would quickly erase the early 1-0 deficit with a power play goal of its own. Just 2:53 into the second period,
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) put the puck home to set the score at 1-1 with assists on the play by
Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and
Zahn Thompson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS).
The rest of the period would be played to with scoreless hockey setting the stage for a third period showdown with the score tied at one goal apiece.
Third PeriodThe Saints would quickly grab the lead on a goal by
Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) just 15 seconds into the period. With assists on the goal going to
Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) and
Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)), CSS found themselves searching for an insurance goal up by a score of 2-1 with 19:45 left to play in the game.
Shortly after taking the lead with 13:10 left in the game, CSS would find that insurance goal in the form of Sawyer, who followed up her assist on the Hanowski goal with a goal of her own. Guzzo and Hanowski got credit with the assists, and with just over 13 minutes to play CSS found themselves leading by two goals at 3-1.
That 3-1 lead would end up holding over the remainder of the third period and CSS skated away with a 3-1 win over over the Falcons.
Hanowski and Sawyer both ended up with a goal and an assist on the day, while Hartfiel ended up saving 27-of-28 shots faced in the game.
Up NextThe Saints (4-3, 3-2 NCHA) will have a layoff until their next game on December 8 when they travel across the bridge to take on UW-Superior with the puck set to drop at 7 p.m.
