Notables-CSS commits 30 turnovers in loss-Sorenson-Giffrow had 19 of her career-high 24 points in the second half-Season opener for Augsburg
MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team saw a 10-point lead in the final three minutes slip away as Augsburg College made two free throws in the final seconds to defeat the Saints 63-62 on Saturday.
Auggies Rally LateThe Saints led for the entire fourth quarter, with the exception of the final five seconds of the game. CSS connected on five 3-pointers in the quarter, including three by
Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)). Her third extended the Saints lead to 10 with 2:27 remaining.
However, that would not only be the final points scored for the Saints, but CSS somehow managed only one more shot at the hoop the rest of the way and no free throw attempts.
In the final two minutes, the Saints turned the ball over six times as the Auggies closed the game on an 11-0 run. After St. Scholastica's final turnover, Augsburg's Hannah Steinhaus would get fouled. She proceeded to comfortably hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to give the Auggies the 63-62 victory.
Turnovers CostlyThe Auggies out-scored the Saints 27-13 in points off turnovers as CSS committed 30 for the game. The Saints only had nine shot attempts in the second quarter. Augsburg scored 13 points off of nine Saints turnovers in that period of time.
Top Performances for CSSSorenson-Giffrow led all scorers with a career-high 24 points. She was 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) added seven points and eight rebounds. The Saints shot 45 percent from the floor for the game. CSS out-rebounded Augsburg 37-27.
Top Performances for the OpponentSteinhaus led the Auggies with 12 points and five rebounds. Ashley Anfinson had 11 points and Allison McKee added 10 points. Augsburg shot 41 percent from the field.
Up NextThe Saints (1-1) will head to Eau Claire next weekend to take part in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tip-Off Classic. CSS will open with host UW-Eau Claire on Friday, November 20.
