csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team finished regulation on a 7-0 run to force overtime, but allowed seven straight points to begin overtime as it fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 83-77 at Zorn Arena on Friday.
Fourth QuarterThrough the first three quarters, the Blugolds had a slight edge in each period, out-scoring the Saints 17-13 in the first, 19-18 in the second and 17-15 in the third period to hold a 53-46 lead heading into the fourth period.
Eau Claire had its biggest lead of regulation at 57-47 with 6:51 to go.
Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) made three 3-pointers in the final four minutes to keep the Saints within reach. After her third 3-pointer cut the margin to four with 1:36 left,
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) made a pair of free throws to make it 67-65 with a minute to go. Eau Claire turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Brennan made a layup to tie the game at 67-67. The Blugolds got a jump shot off as time expired, but it was off the mark and the game went to overtime.
OvertimeThe Blugolds' Madison Johnson scored the first seven points of overtime to make it 74-67. The lead grew as high as 12 before Eau Claire eventually pulled it out 83-77.
Top CSS PerformersSorenson-Giffrow finished with 24 points and was 5-of-12 from beyond the arc. She also led the team with six rebounds. Brennan had 15 points and
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) finished with 12 points.
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) and
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench. The CSS bench out-scored the Eau Claire bench 26-13. The Saints made 10 3-pointers for the game and shot 45 percent from the field.
Top UWEC PerformersJohnson finished with a game-high 27 points, shooting 11-for-15 from the floor. Teenie Lichtfuss had 16 points and Jenni LaCroix added 15 points. The Blugolds shot 49 percent from the field, but were only 15-of-28 from the free throw line.
Up NextThe Saints (1-2) will take on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse tomorrow in Eau Claire. Tip time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
