ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team and No. 14 Macalester College Scots were scoreless for 88 minutes Friday evening until the Scots buried one home with 1:49 remaining in regulation to end the Saints' season 1-0 in NCAA Division III Tournament first round action at Macalester Stadium.
On the Defense EarlyCSS goalkeeper
Sandy Davidson-Hunt (Kenora, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) had to make three saves in the first eight minutes of the game as Macalester, known for its defense, came out offensive. The Scots out-shot the Saints 13-7 in the first half of play with CSS getting four shots on goal and Macalester getting six on goal.
Second HalfThe Saints had great chances midway through the second half as
Ben Phillips (Lymm, England/Lymm HS) had a shot looking like it was heading into the goal, but a Macalester defender turned it away.
The Scots, who used more of their bench than the Saints, started to put a lot of pressure on in the final five minutes. Davidson-Hunt made a save and then CSS blocked shot, which resulted in a Macalester corner kick. The Scots capitalized after a scramble from the corner kick was finally put home by Austin Burrows with 1:49 remaining. That is how the game ended with Macalester advancing on to the second round with a 1-0 victory.
Final StatsThe Scots out-shot the Saints 18-12 for the game, including 9-7 on goal. That marked the first time this season the Saints were out-shot in a game. Davidson-Hunt had eight saves in the loss, while Zeke Vainer of Macalester had six saves in the shutout.
