DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team lost to the Falcons of Univesrity of Wisconsin-River Falls by a final score of 79-58 despite a career milestone for
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS). Hovick scored 25 points and reached 1,000 points for her career on 10-of-14 shooting.
CSS stayed with River Falls for the first 12 minutes of the first half answering almost every Falcon bucket with one of their own. Unfortunately for the Saints that would not last. With 7:43 to go and the Saints behind 17-14, UW River Falls embarked on a 20-8 scoring run that lasted the entire rest of the first half highlighted by 3-point baskets by Richell Mehus and Katie Theisen setting the halftime score at 37-22 in favor of the Falcons.
CSS would come roaring back to life early on in the second half. They started out with an 11-3 scoring run of their own to cut the deficit down to just seven points with 17:11 to go in the game. That run for CSS was highlighted by a
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) 3-pointer that made it just a nine point game at 40-31. Hovick would end the run with two free throws to cut the hole to 40-33.
UW River Falls would put the game out of reach with a 20-6 run that effectively neutralized the Saints , and in just under six minutes the score was 60-39 in favor of the Falcons.
CSS would never recover from that run as River Falls coasted out the rest of the game en route to a 79-58 victory over CSS.
Mehus earned herself a double double for the Falcons with 14 points and 10 rebounds on the night while Taylor Karge had 17 points to lead the way for River Falls.
Hovick led the way with 25 points for CSS while teammates
Brittani Brennan (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) and
Jenna Langer (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) each added eight points of their own.
