ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Freshman Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) scored a season-high 18 points off the bench as the St. Scholastica women's basketball team defeated Northland College 83-48 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener on Saturday.

Entering the day, senior guard Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) needed 18 points to reach 1,000 in her career and finished today's game with 10. That means she is eight points away from 1,000 and she can reach that mark Tuesday night at home against UW-River Falls.

The Saints led 13-2 early, but the LumberJills got back in it and eventually took a 21-19 lead five minutes later. Northland was up 23-22 before St. Scholastica went on a 16-0 run over five minutes to take control.

CSS had another 16-0 run from the end of the first half through the start of the second half as the LumberJills went nearly eight minutes without scoring a point. Northland had only two made field goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half.

The CSS bench outscored the Northland bench 40-5. The Saints shot a season-high 55 percent from the floor, while the LumberJills finished at 31 percent. The Saints scored 26 points off of 24 Northland turnovers.

VanKempen finished with a double-double of 18 points and team-high 11 rebounds. Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) and Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) each added 12 points. Alison Blackford led Northland with 13 points.

The Saints (4-7, 1-0 UMAC) will have one more non-conference matchup on Tuesday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the Reif Gymnasium. The game can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
