Box Score DE PERE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The 15th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team saw its season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to No. 1-ranked St. Norbert College in the inaugural Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup championship game Saturday night.
The Saints started strong, but the Green Knights started to control the action midway through the opening period and struck first on the power-play when Erik Cooper scored on a rebound off a blocked shot. St. Norbert scored minutes later on a Blake Thompson shot from the left point. The Green Knights had an 8-6 shot advantage in the first period.
It remained 2-0 until the 6:45 mark of the second period when Cullen Bradshaw got the puck right in front of the net and put it home to make it 3-0 after two periods.
After a fourth Green Knights goal, the Saints got on the board when
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) found the back of the net to make it 4-1.
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) was credited with the assist. However, St. Norbert would add another goal and win the inaugural Harris Cup by a final score of 5-1.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 17 saves in the loss, while David Jacobson had 17 saves in the win for the Green Knights. Jacobson was also named the Harris Cup's Most Valuable Player.
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) and Malenstyn were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Saints (16-9-4) will say goodbye to a senior class of eight. The class recorded 53 wins over the last four seasons and advanced to at least the NCHA Tournament semifinals each of the past three years. For future news on the St. Scholastica men's hockey program keep checking csssaints.com.
