Anita Kirvesniemi (Simpele, Finland/Joensuun Yhteiskoulun Lukio (New Mexico)) is proving she is a 5km classic force in the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA), notching her second straight podium in the event this season.
Coming off a second place finish at Mt. Itasca, Kirvesniemi nearly did the same on the tough course at Al Quaal Saturday, finishing just three-tenths of a second out of second in a time of 12:09.9.
Northern Michigan took the top two spots with Mary Kate Cirelli winning in a time of 11:48.3. Hannah Boyer edged Kirvesniemi for second in a time of 12:09.6.
Sarah Allen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Northern Michigan)) continued her enchanted final season with the Saints, posting 12:35.9 for eighth spot, while
Brooke Adams (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS ) came home in 15th with a time of 12:45.9.
Northern Michigan won comfortably with 66 points, but the Saints surprised for a second straight weekend, taking second with 50 points, edging Michigan Tech by a single point in third. Alaska finished fourth.
The second place finish betters a top finish in a single-day CCSA Championship race by two spots, as the Saints have never finished higher than fourth in the event.
The championship weekend wraps up with the 15km mass start freestyle Sunday.
