Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell in overtime to No. 1 St. Norbert 2-1 Saturday night with
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) accounting for the lone Saints goal.
The game started with the momentum clearly in the favor of St. Norbert with the Green Knights outshooting the Saints in the first period 13-2, and with 8:55 remaining in the period took the lead 1-0 on a goal scored by Brandon Hoogenboom.
The second period saw a different Saints team as CSS took to the offensive nearly tying the game right off of the period opening faceoff when
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) shot the puck just wide of the goal.
Despite the aggressive play of the Saints the second period ended with the score still set at 1-0.
The aggressive play continued for the Saints into the third period, and quickly paid off as Bruce buried home a mid-range shot off of a pass by
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) making the score 1-1 with 18:34 to go in the game.
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) also got credit for an assist on the play.
Perhaps the defining moment of the game came with just under seven minutes left when
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) appeared to put the Saints ahead with a huge goal, but it was quickly waived off by the official and reviewed with the goal judge who confirmed the no goal call keeping the score set at 1-1.
The game would remain at 1-1 for the rest of regulation requiring an overtime period to decide the game.
The overtime would not go as well as the Saints wanted it, however, when just 1:09 into the period Hoogenboom again put the puck into the back of the net to win the game for St. Norbert 2-1.
Saints goalie
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) finished the game with 29 saves, 12 of which came in the first period alone while St. Norbert goalie David Jacobson made 16.
